Mount Washington Hike: The Jewell Trail
Sunday, July 20
This summer, I've done quite a few hikes. I love mountains, and forests, and views, and the exercise you get from hiking is so much better than running or walking or biking. And, yesterday, I crossed a major hike off my Thirty Before Thirty list: Mount Washington!
My father, my friend Mary, her father, and I all made the trek to New Hampshire the night before, where we got a few hours' sleep before breakfast and then an early start to the trail head. There, we met up with two of her father's friends (who had driven up that morning! ahhhh!). Torn between the Ammonoosuc Ravine and Jewell Trails, we eventually settled on the latter. I was quite pleased with this, since we spent the majority of the hike above the tree line, with great views.
The hike up took us about four hours, we hung out and rested on top for a bit (glaring a bit at those who drove or took the Cog Railway up, probably out of snobbery or jealousy or both), before hiking back down. It took us just over three hours to get down, although my father then hiked back up the trail to help out a older woman, hiking alone, that we had passed.
It was tiring, but the trail itself was not overly difficult. Next time, I would love to try Ammonoosuc, and then (maybe) the Tuckerman Ravine Trail--we saw the trail entrance near the top and it looked so beautiful!
